A 52 Week Autobiography Through Music Week 28 – Joy Division and New Order

A 52 Week Autobiography Through Music - Week 28 - Joy Division:New Order from Pancycle on Vimeo.

Joy Division is another band that got their start in late 1970s England, Manchester specifically, and who were born out of the raw energy of the punk era but went a different route musically. For a band that was only in existence for a few years and who only made 2 albums they were hugely influential and widely appreciated. Fortunately for us, the fans of their music, there was enough enthusiasm for the band that their second album, "Closer" was released and promoted despite the fact that they had disbanded after their singer Ian Curtis committed suicide.

I grouped Joy Division and New Order together for this week's post because I found it really impossible to separate them. I would say that I was more of a Joy Division fan when I was in my middle teens than I was a New Order fan however I think I felt a certain loyalty to New Order given that they chose to carry on making music post Joy Division. Also as I say in the video there was something that made New Order stand out among all the other bands from that period of the early to mid eighties. They were less polished and shiny than their New Wave contemporaries.

When ‘Power Corruption& Lies’ came out, Rolling Stone magazine reviewed it, ‘Unknown Pleasures’, ‘Closer’ and ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ in the same review which introduced me to those albums. They remain a touchstone for goth and dark fans to this day.
